IT Benchmarking
"...if you don't know where you are,
you don't know where you're going..."
Benchmarking adds value
Benchmarking is a systematic comparison of key numbers for companies' performance: by looking at experience and results from others the individual company can reach a better understanding of what works and what doesn’t, and apply this to its own organisation.
You could say that benchmarking moves the discussion from "what’s wrong?" to "how can we improve?" Furthermore, establishing benchmarking as an ongoing activity in the company results in continuous improvement. In short: good decisions start with good information and benchmarking creates frameworks, structures and methodology for making essential decisions within an organisation.
Benchmarking of IT systems
When it comes to IT systems, benchmarking is one of the most efficient tools for initiating and maintaining continuous improvement: here it is also necessary to have access to relevant information so as to identify problems precisely and develop sustainable solutions. This applies both at the operational level (e.g. of an SAP system) and at the strategic level (e.g. when considering the purchase of a whole new system).
